Overview:
- MS-Windows editor
- stand alone program
- WYSIWYG - Shows text at approximate sizing, colors links, etc..
- NO HTML Checking during loading - Forces proper use during editing of new
document.
- Somewhat Stable - continuous disk access slowed system to a crawl.
Crashed my system once during loading of HTML files created previously. Found
it ran reasonable on a Win95 system, however. I welcome comments from users
who have had success using this product.
- 30 day trial, $29 USD
- Score = C (with promise)
- Screen
Shot (~31KBytes)
- User Comments
Nice features Found in this package include:
NOTE: An evaluation of this product was not available on
Mysoftware's website. These comments refer to Livemarkup 0.95beta.
- Nice Display
- The display includes some nice functional elements in addition to showing
an approximate of what a browser may see. Small boxes next to each element
can be selected to indicate what should be acted upon. In addition these
boxes represent the logical connection and hierarchy of different lines of
text (for example a list has one box to show what is included, and another box
indicates each item in the list). Unfortunately, the editor was temperamental
with respect to my in-line graphics (displayed only a smilely face instead of
graphic).
- Right mouse button access to styles
- CLicking the right mouse button over a section or selection of text brings
up a menu for styles or editing depending on the context. On the downside,
this is the only way to access a menu item to create a link, which is a little
non-intuitive for a new user.
Missing/Poorly Implemented Features:
- Very slow (Dell XPS 486DX2/66 with 8 Meg RAM/20 Meg virtural memory)
- The system operated so slowly, that I often waited 20 seconds or more for
screen updates. Typing was a chore at a rate of 1 second per character.
During every operation the disk drive ran continuously. Perhaps this Beta
version is swapping two often used overlays, but it is extremely slow. I
welcome comments from other users. This limited my ability to test what the
software could do, so I may have missed something. Found that on a Win95
system, the speed was bearable (still DX2/66 with 8Meg RAM); I will test this
product more when time allows.
- No HTML 3.0 support
- From my short look at the package (see above), there seemed to be a lack
of HTML 3.0 Tags.
- Very poor link dialog
- The link dialog is very poor and requires the user to completely type in
the URL and has no browsing capability.
Conclusion:
This could have been a very nice editor because it blends the graphical
display well with the function of writing HTML. Other amazing features may be
present, but I could not get past the performance. The slow performance and
lack of a real link dialog will send you back to your trusty text editor with
your browser running in the background. This package has promise, so I'll
check out the 1.0 version when it arrives.
