Overview:
- MS-Windows
- Stand alone program
- Text Style
- Score = B-
- HTML checking -- Validation menu selections.
- Somewhat Stable - some general protection faults using table editor, but
main program continued to operate.
- Shareware: $30 USD
- Screen Shot
- User Comments
Nice features found in this package include:
- Syntax checking for HTML2, 3 and Netscape extensions
- Though the package does not check your text while editing, it will perform
a syntax check on demand (fully compliant SGML parser). The application
presents a useful dialog box describing each violation, though some suggestions
on how to comply would be appreciated.
- Tag Assistant
- A dialog box is available which will display all the possible attributes
for each tag. The user simply fills in the blanks. Lists of acceptable values
are available with a double click. This is useful to aid in using occasional
attributes and to provide an occasional insight into HTML.
- Table Assistant
- Several dialogs are provided to simplify creating and populating a table.
The editor acts like a separate program because it uses the clipboard for
transferring the final table to document. In addition, it is extremely easy to
perform splits and joins on selected ranges of cells. I'm disappointed that the
table editor will not work on previously created tables.
- Supports HTML 3.0
- This package supports many of the proposed HTML 3.0 tags.
Missing/Poorly Implemented Features:
- Poor user interface
- The package provides a single combination scroll box to access every tag
available. This is very frustrating to use, especially since the user can not
customize the tool bar (a customizable tag tool box is planned for version 1.2).
I found it easier to enter almost every tag by hand.
- Not suited to new authors
- The validation may help neophytes, but they'll have a hard time seeing the
relationship between tags. An interface structure which groups tags by function
is sorely needed.
Conclusion:
This package should be considered as a text editor which can
validate HTML syntax. It fails as a tool to simplify and speed up document
creation. However, this package would make a good companion to other editors
which lack validation capabilities. The price is reasonable when compared to
other software which parses and validates HTML.
