HTMLed Pro version 2.0 (HTMLed 1.5)-- Internet Software Technologies

Found: http://www.ist.ca

Overview:

Nice features found in this package include:

Chromatic syntax highlighting
This package shows the tags, text, and entities in different colors which is very useful and aids in design.
Table and Forms (pro) editors and built in image map editor
The included table and form editors are very intuitive to use and well designed and includes a preview feature. The form editor allows you to graphically edit the form, and view a preview of what it would look like in a browser before committing the source to the file. I would love to see the table editor also allow you to edit previously created tables. Form editor is only available in the Pro version. The application also includes a easy to use imagemap builder.
HTML Tutorial included in shrink wrapped version
A useful tutorial on HTML is included in the box. The document is clear and concise and should help a beginning author start creating documents. It would be nice if this type of help was included in the on-line help file.
Customizable tool bar, right button menu, "quick text" key strokes
A button bar on the right side of the screen can support user defined text. New text can be quickly added (just right click over the target button) and compound tags are supported. This is very useful in the current implementation. Also, the package includes a completely customizable right-button pop-up menu. Any element in the package, including button and menu items, can be included as part of the menu. Finally, the user can define text which will be entered when <ctrl>-Q and a letter is typed.
Opening and saving to remote server (pro)
The package can open files on a remote server (using FTP and saving a copy to local drive) to edit and then save (up load) them. I found this useful because the program remembered extended filenames, and the files are immediately available for live testing. This feature is available only on the Pro version.
Document Templates and HTML page builder
The program comes with a standard document outline which includes the HEAD, HTML, BODY tags. When a new document is created a dialog is presented which allows the user to select what standard elements to include, and enter some initial information. This simplifies starting a new document. Also, user templates can be stored. Finally, there is a "wizard" to help create a home page.
HTML 3.2 support and Netscape/IE extensions
I found support for the proposed 3.2 specification. This includes an applet tag builder, a nice frame designer, and a font tag dialog box.
Other features
HTMLed Pro has a spelling checker built in. Also, the Pro version can import RTF files. The application also has a multi-file find and replace.

Missing/Poorly Implemented Features:

Word wrap did not operate
I selected word wrap option, but the application did not wrap the words as expected.
No attribute dialogs or lists
HTML 3.2 is full of tags with a large numbers of attributes. This package provides minimal assistance with attributes. Although common ones are found in elements that have dialogs (div, tables, forms, etc.), I wish this was available for all elements.

Conclusion:

HTMLed started as one of my favorites and added enhancements through 1.1 to keep me impressed with the package (first with a remote FTP feature, for example). Version 2.0 is still a strong editor which does not suffer from a complicated interface as some other packages. This will appeal to experience authors who don't want "fluffy" features to get in the way of creating their documents. Unfortunately, it has fallen behind some of its competitors in some areas. For example, many other editors provide upload/download as HTMLed does, but also include advanced project management. HTMLed is still a solid application, however. If you need to build forms graphically, but still want a text based editor, this application will fill those needs. I still like HTMLed, but find other editors more compelling.
